This is America.

Our consciousness is awakened but our soul is still fast asleep.  REM, as its slumber is driven by the ideals of its creation, or rather sustainment.

This country began with the noblest intentions.  Taxation without representation; to create a land of freedom with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  A model for all future nations that freedom is the root of a stable democracy where all its citizens have a voice that can shape a government in its own image.  Majority rule – for White Males, all while exploiting minorities.

The formula was simple: Secure land; land taken from Native Americans, intense labor; labor enacted by slaving Africans and lastly, protect its investment; the right to bear arms was not illegal for women, but definitely not encouraged.  All designed to amass wealth.  Which it did. Massively, leading to the Industrial Age resulting in America becoming a major player globally with exports producing riches that would transform this nation for many years to come.

But things went to far, so then came the Civil War: A result of greed, selfishness and entitlement.  The South, capitalizing off of its growing wealth, figured, ‘we don’t need the North,’ but the North wasn’t having that, they needed those monies in order to sustain the union.  Thus the war began.

Historically it’s called The Civil War, scholars have named it The War between the States but time has deemed it – The War for America’s Soul, and it’s been battling ever since.

Ever since the invasion of 1620.  Remember, not all White people were complicit in this quest for Imperialism.  A pursuit that began annihilating an entire race of people with no regards for compassion but many fought against this desire, losing their lives, but more importantly, setting the tone that this enterprise isn’t going to take place unopposed.  Exampled by the Quakers who fought this battle as soon as they set foot on North American soil in the mid 1600’s – all while facing constant prosecution.  In fact, William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, emphatically defended Native American Rights and established an abolitionist belief so secure that many years later when the Pennsylvanian government was becoming too pacifist, it abruptly changed its ways back to its original Quaker beliefs.

And when this nation was crippled by its greed, post Civil War, these beliefs continued bandaging the wounds with compassion for the less fortunate, creating Reconstruction, arguably the most prolific era for comfort and acceptance in the tenure of Black Americans’ existence since that first slave ship set sail with coordinates headed for Jamestown.  But just as soon as ‘right seemed right,’ the evilness of America’s quest again took hold.  Capitalism out bid Compassion and Jim Crow, redefined slavery into a law and order judicial system while the unabashed mayhem the KKK invoked, petrified any “Quaker-ish” ideal that sought not to protect imperialism.  And influx(ed) the Carnegies, Fords, Pullmans, Kennedys, Rockefellers, Weyerhaeusers, Goulds, etc.

And this war for the soul of America continued to rage forward.  Compassion hadn’t white flagged; in fact, it triumphed in achieving voting rights for all women (White).  A minority now holding significant power.  Anne Braden, Virginia Durr, Juliette Morgan and Lillian Smith are just a few examples of White women who understood the negative effects of disenfranchisement, and fought to secure the rights of people of color and empowered the efforts of Rosa Parks, Grace Lee Boggs and Coretta Scott King to eventually begat a Civil Rights Movement.

Although capitalism still thrived in the 20th century, Compassion put on a hell of a show.  Strengthening; changing laws, ideals, mindsets and the direction of America and challenging the status quo.

But new barons, the Waltons, Kochs, Adelsons, Cohens, Soros, etc. are influx(ing) and influencing America too, continuing the war.  But the tide is strengthening and remember, evolution always wins: survival of the fittest and only the strong will survive.  And, there’s a browning of America that is taking place.  In addition to, women having sustained their position in the world with enough confidence to enact a movement #metoo that is ripe for success.  Also, ‘abolitionists,’ have been such integrated that they too have developed the power and wisdom to speak out.  Bottom-line, “capitalism,” is against the ropes, suffering a standing 8 count.  And hence Donald Trump.  The embodied resurrection of the founding ideals and sustained imperial direction of America.  This Civil War or The War for America’s Soul is now at a crux.  The election of Obama showed the seriousness of the compassion movement while The Donald’s rise showed that, what America was, it still is.  Right now, the Libran scale is balanced, precariously equal, waiting for an unanticipated factor to sway toward the futuristic path of America.  And that factor may be the children.  The children dying at the hands of the gun, the laws that create this environment and the powers that be that sustain this turmoil.

These children, overall, were born and raised in the battle.  Born by the mothers who now have the confidence and born in an America that elected a Black President.  Their power alone isn’t enough but they are conjoined with the new ‘abolitionists,’ the women who birthed them and the viewpoint that the quest for imperialism is having them killed.

“I believe that children are our future.   Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
